AREA 04 — LEVEL — SAND TO CEILING
Between the lagoon and the ocean, a Northern Beaches home carries sand in on bare feet, salt on the breeze and a lot of light through the glass. We design residential interiors that are built for that life, not just photographed in it.
LEVEL: FLOOR — glazed wall to the garden
FLOOR
Indoor–outdoor living: thresholds, decks and the rooms that open onto them.
WALL
Surfaces that tolerate sand and salt air. Colour & Material Selection
CEILING
Strong daylight balanced with evening layers. Lighting & Finishes
PLAN
Family houses and knock-down rebuilds. New Build Interior Design
LEVEL — FLOOR
Many homes across the Northern Beaches are lived through the back door as much as the front. Wet towels, boards, bikes and a dog all come in the same way, so the real entry is often the laundry, the side passage or the sliding doors to the deck.
We plan that route first. A floor that runs in a consistent level and tone from inside to out makes a small living room read larger, while a defined drop zone for bags, shoes and sandy gear stops the whole ground floor becoming a mudroom. Where the layout itself has to move, Space Planning sets out circulation and zones before any surface is chosen.
LEVEL — WALL
Coastal exposure changes how surfaces age. Our Colour & Material Selection service weighs how a finish wears, not only how it looks on a sample board.
UNDERFOOT
Sand acts like fine abrasive. Textured, matt and mid-tone floors hide grit and scuffing better than high-gloss or very dark boards, and rugs near doors should be easy to lift and shake out.
FABRICS
Removable, washable covers suit sofas that meet damp swimwear. Sun-facing rooms need fabrics chosen with fading in mind.
HARDWARE
Salt air is hard on some metal finishes, especially near open doors. We check supplier guidance on coastal suitability for tapware, handles and fixings before they go into the schedule.
BENCH & JOINERY
Laundries and outdoor-facing kitchens need moisture-tolerant carcasses and edges. See Custom Joinery Design.
LEVEL: WALL — bright room, floor lamp
LEVEL — CEILING
Beach light is generous and often harsh. Pale walls can glare at midday and look flat at dusk, so we test colours against the actual aspect of each room and use shading, texture and warmer tones to calm the brightest spaces.
After sunset, a single row of downlights rarely does the job. Lighting & Finishes layers pendants, wall lights and lamps so a living room can shift from family dinner to a quiet evening. Read more in Layered Lighting for Sydney Homes and Choosing Colour Palettes for Sydney Light.
LEVEL — PLAN
Across the peninsula, older beach houses are being extended, renovated or replaced with new homes built for growing families. Each route asks for different decisions at a different time.
Building new. Interior decisions are cheapest to change on paper. New Build Interior Design works from the plans, so joinery, power and light positions suit the furniture and the way you live. See also Planning Interiors for a New Build.
Renovating. For a house that stays, Renovation Interior Design sorts out what to keep, open up or rebuild, with Design Documentation for the builder.
Finishing. When the shell works, Furniture Selection and Interior Styling complete the rooms in stages.
